Tomix Shinkansen 700 DCC, DIY Lights, and more

The last week I have been working on a Tomix Hikari Rail Star Shinkansen 700 (92822) DCC install, and have been documenting it photographically so that I can write up a HOW-TO on it. It is very similar to the Tomix Hello Kitty Shinkansen 500 I also did and am writing up.

On the JNSForum.com (Japan N-Scale Modeling, and other Japan Rail related stuff forum), we’ve been talking about DIY interior lights, as the commercial ones are quite expensive when you have an 8 car, 12 car, or 16 car train to do. I volunteered to make a circuit and design a board. I did a circuit, which I now call V1, and had some prototype boards made. They came this week and I’ve been building some, and trying them out (including in the Hikari Rail Star). Before the boards actually arrived, I figured out some changes I’d like to make to the circuit so have designed a V2 circuit and am in the middle of laying out the board for that. Once done, I will get some prototypes made and tested. If they check out, I’ll make the files available so anyone can get a PCD maker to make them some boards. I’ll also sell the boards here for those who don’t want to make their own. These are just the boards. You’ll need to buy your own components to put on the boards. The boards are designed to work with a variety of components and component values.

Prototype DIY Lighting board V1 after using the hot-plate SMD solder method. Not yet cleaned up or fixed at this stage so one LED is askew, and voltage regulator is not on yet as I did that by hand on this first one.

The Hikari Rail Star DCC conversion I am hoping to document this weekend or this coming week, so watch this space.
